Stormy Markets: Sacrificial Feasts and Interest Rate Roulette
• The BIST100 wrapped up the day at 5,269 points, taking a tumble of 3.77%. The approaching sacrifice feast, coupled with the closure of credit positions ahead of the central bank's interest rate decision set to be unveiled this week, caused the market to hit the brakes and switch to panic mode. We expect selling to continue today.
• When it comes to foreign financial institutions' anticipation of interest rates from CBRT for June, Goldman Sachs stands tall with the highest prediction at a staggering 40%, while Standard Chartered takes the prize for the lowest estimate, coming in at a mere 14%
• Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç reported that they are working on the regulation limiting the rent increase rate to 25 percent, which will expire on 1 July 2023.
• European markets experienced a decline at the beginning of the trading week due to investors' concerns about the economic outlook. Construction and material stocks saw a drop of 2.5% due to worries about a potential mortgage crisis in the UK and a decrease in house asking prices.
• ECB Vice-President said that the slowdown in core inflation may be limited.
• In line with expectations, the People's Bank of China lowered the reference base interest rate, LPR, by 10 basis points.
